PS Actual things that can be done to make a normal (stripperless) reading much better, not that all of these rules for readers haven’t been presented a million times before and not that I always follow them myself but still:
- NO MORE THAN TEN MINUTES
- Be funny. Even if your book is about your mom dying there must be at least one funny part. Read that.
- Yes you do have to practice. That means practice actually reading it aloud.
- Edit your chosen excerpt liberally for time and interest; I know your manuscript is precious and perfect as it is but you probably didn’t write it to be read aloud, so revise with that in mind.
- There really needs to be booze at this reading! Just don’t get so drunk that you slur.

If I get my act together, my next “Publishing School” for the Awl is supposed to be on readings — needless to say, I’ll be in touch!
