Transmissions: The Literature of AIDS

The School of Writing in conjunction with the publishing collective Mischief and Mayhem marks the 30th anniversary of the start of the AIDS epidemic with a one-day symposium featuring two panels. The event also features a screening of Dan Fishback’s thirtynothing and David Wojnarowicz’s A Fire in the Belly; excerpts from the ACT UP Oral History Project and selections from the Visual AIDS’ Broadside series and Archive Project which will be on display. The day will close with a reading.
The schedule for the symposium is:
11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. - The first panel will discuss writing from 1981 to 1995 and features David France, Michael Denneny, Larry Kramer, Sarah Schulman, John Weir, and Edmund White.
2:00-4:00 p.m. - The second panel explores work from 1996 to the present, and features Rabih Alameddine, Gary Indiana, Zia Jaffrey, Amy Scholder, and Max Steele. Both panels moderated by Mischief + Mayhem co-founder and School of Writing faculty member Dale Peck.
6:00-7:00 p.m. - Reception will be held in Wollman Hall, 65 W. 11th Street.
7:00-9:00 p.m. - Rabih Alameddine, Michael Denneny, Gary Indiana, Zia Jaffrey, John Kelley, Larry Kramer, Jennie Livingston, Amy Scholder, Max Steele, John Weir, and Edmund White, will read their work or the work of artists who have died of AIDS.

Admission: Free; no tickets or reservations required; seating is first-come first-served
